A Siva Temple in Mahendra Mangalam

This is a request from Kanchi Sankara Matam, Pujyasri Periyava
Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal
for your kind consideration and support.

February 3, 2011

Mahendramangalam, a village on Tiruchi-Thottiyam road, near the famous Musiri town, is a 1500 year old temple for Lord Siva. This is one of the favourite places of the venerable sage of Kanchi, Sri Sri Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswathi Swamigal of Kanchi Mutt, "Maha Periyava" to million of His devotees.

Mahendra Mangalam gets its eminence from the fact that Paramacharya, in his early days of sanyasa (1911-1914), stayed here to learn the Vedas. When Mahaswami was appointed head of the Mutt at a very young age, he had a lot of visitors in Kumbakonam due to which Mutt authorities were forced to find a place where he would not be disturbed. Hence, Mahendramangalam was chosen for the Seer's study. The Veda Patasala where the Kanchi Seer had studied is well maintained in this Village.

Sri Mahaperiyava observed Chatur Maasya vrata for three years in this charming village, through which Akanda Cauvery flows. And this is, where Mahaperiyava started his holy padhayatra (Digvijaya) too. Mahaperiyava during his stay at Mahendramangalam, installed (prathishta) Adisankarar idol and performed pooja daily. Now, Mahaperiyava's idol has been Consecrated by the Samithi at the behest of the present Acharyas of Kanchimutt

The presiding deities of this 1500 year old Mahendramangalam temple remains - Maha Tripurasundari samedha Sri Chandramouliswarar. The Sivalingam was retrieved from the remains buried under the soil in this village and now it has been placed under a thatched roof for worship.

Kanchi Maha Periyava time and again stressed the importance of renovation and maintenance of old temples on priority over construction of new temples. With this objective and with the blessings of our Aacharyas, a trust named as Sri Kamakoti Seva Samithi Trust has been formed to take care of the construction of this temple. This entire temple complex (1st phase), apart from the Moolavar and Ambal, will have Pancha Parivaram - Vigneshwarar, Muruga, Chandikeswarar, Nandhi and Navagraham with Pancha Koshtam - Nritha Ganapathy, Dakshinamurthy, Brahma, Mahavishnu and Durga. The main deity, Sri Chandramouliswara, will be seven feet about the road level and the entire temple complex will be 100 feet by 45 feet.

The estimated cost of the construction of the temple (1st phase) is around Rs.50 Lakhs. Baalalayam and Bhoomi Puja have been performed and preliminary construction work has been commenced. We appeal to you to contribute your might to this sacred project of the Seers of Kanchi Mutt and get the Anugraham of Maha Periyava and present Aacharyas of the Mutt.
