jaayate' mriyate' vaa kadaachin naayam bhuthva bhavithaa na bhooyah: | ajo
nithyah saasvato'yam puraano na hanyate' hanyamaane' sareere' ||

II - 20 --
Never is he ( Soul
) born, nor does he die at any time, he has never
been brought
into being, nor shall come hereafter; unborn, eternal, permanant
and ancient ( primeval ). When the body is slain, he is not slain.

nithyam ya e'nam ajam avyayam | katham
sa purushah paartha kam ghaathayathi hanthi kam || -II-21
|| Chapter
II - 21
--
O' Arjunaa, know this soul to be eternal, undecaying, birthless and indestructible.
A
person who knows him to be so -- whom can he slay or cause another to slay.

jeernaani yathaa vihaaya navaani gr.hnaathi naro' paraani | thathaa
sareeraani vihaaya jeernany-anyaani samyaathi navaani de'hi

Chapter II
- 22 --
As a man casts off worn-out garments and puts on new ones, so
the embodied soul casts off the worn-out body and enters other new ones.

chindhanthi sasthraani nainan dhahathi paavakah | na
ch'ainam kle'dhayanthy aapo' na so'sayathi maarutah" ||

No weapon can cleave him; nor the fire burn him, no
waters can make him wet, nor the wind dry him up.

yam adhaahyo' yam akle'dhyo' sya eva cha | nithyah
sarva-gathah sthaanoor achalo' yam sanaathanah:

Uncleaveable is he; he is not burnt; nor be wetted and neither be dried;
Eternal, all-pervading, stable and immovable is he from everlasting time.

e'vam vidhithvainam naanusochitum-arhasi ||

He is spoken as invisible, unthinkable and immutable;
therefore, you ought not to grieve comprhending as such.

For death is certain to one who is born; to one who is dead, birth
is certain; therefore,
thou shalt not grieve for what is unavoidable.
