Lesson 1 : Meditation - Introduction

Every human being, every Soul - the Jivãtmã - has an inner flame of Divine Being as part of the Divine Soul - the Paramãtmã - in the heart as all goodness in peace and harmony with Nature. This flame is surrounded by five opposing effects due to Maya which is covering it like a sheath of ignorance - called Upãdis. There are five states of the mind. [Kshiptã, Mûdhã, Vikshiptã, Ekãgratã and Nirudhã]. These are Anger, Confusion or forgetfullness, Fear, Ego and Ignorance. [The first two are depicted in the first layer here.] These are caused by some attachments of the Soul to the world due to the Upãdis. They cause some bonding effects on the human life and soul's journey through this world. They are determined by one persons guna like Sattwika, Rajasika and Tamasika which every one has in various proportions. They are affected by the individual desires and aspirations of a persons [Purushãrtha] like Dharma (goodness), Artha (posession), Kãma (pleasure) and ultimate Moksha ( liberation).

How they surround the inner flame of soul and what are their cause and effect is seen in the next page.
