9. An analysis of the Celestial Forces worshipped in Devotion

How do these Devathas become worthy of our Devotional prayers?
Now we have the question, as to how the Devathas get the supernatural powers of Divine and why they are worshipped as god. Are they created as Divine or do our prayers make them Divine? Are the Tamasika worshippers right in praying for them? When the simple Hindu terminology as 'Devatha' in various Indian languages is translated into simple English, it is often termed as gods or demi-gods. This is the limitation and problem in translation. When the priests and teachers explain the theology and principles of the practice, large segments of the general public who are illiterate do not care to study and learn the details, due to other priorities in life. They were satisfied with some basic details and some rituals which developed as the tradition of the various communities. Most of them, still in the Tamasika level of understanding of God, have a blind faith and a fear of the Divine fury. They end up worshipping the Devathas in these forms as the Supreme for various causes.

Some worship one form or the other according to their own choice or following the message they receive from their leaders or teachers. Some develop their own religious group around such a Devatha as their prime God, ignoring all other forms or denying them. As we have already seen, with repeated prayers of worship, the electromagnetic forces and our mental powers of prayer also create a force field around the Devathas we worship and they develop the strength from our prayers and sacrificial offerings. When the universe and all beings are surrounded by these forces of Angels, good and bad, people worship them with the fear of their anger and for their blessings and boons. Some religious leaders explained to their followers only these grand angels as their ultimate path for worship. Many felt, that it is sufficient to worship these Devathas. This is true in other faiths also. Their spiritual understanding does not go beyond this level of religious practice. Most popular religions do not rise above this level.

The Tamasika worshippers believed that the Divine force, its various aspects and also the various Devathas which are their object of worship resided in the various designated locations where they established specific prayer places like a temple with a marker stone or a statue representing the Devatha or God. Every area where an unnatural or supernatural event happenedbecame a place of worship. Every area where they want the Divine help and blessing is needed to ward of evil or get blessings with prosperity they established a small temple or prayer area for such angels. Many local leaders and great men also were worshipped after their death with a marker stone established at or near the area where their mortal remains were buried or cremated. When the community traveled or moved to another location, they established temples for similar marker stones or statues to continue to receive the boons and blessings. This is how the tradition of building Temples evolved.

This is the very external form of worship of a Deity as God. It is the most basic form of a faith for the unenlightened or the Tamasika worshipper based on the feeling that God is external to us and dwells in a particular locality like the prayer room or Temple. The pilgrimages, worship of several images of God, symbols and sacred books are examples of this. They recite prayer songs to appease these forms of the Divine forces of nature and Devathas and also forms of God. Some worshipped these Devathas and also their guardian angels. Ultimately they reached the level of worshipping some aspects of God in the manifest forms or Saguna Brahman that controlled these Devathas and their activities. This started with the worship of Sri Ganesha and Aadhi Parasakthi or Kaali which were the main aspects of the Divine which controlled the Universal forces. This aspect of Hindu religious tradition developed into the higher level of understanding which leads to the Bhakthi aspects of the practice of Rajasika worship.
