1. Life History of Sri Sankara Bagavadpada

Dharma Samsthapanaaya Sambhavami Yuge' Yuge"

The most basic and primary belief and unshaken faith of the followers of Hindu Dharma is what Sri Krishna gives us in His Gita verse in one sentence is that whenever a need arises to control a calamity and confusion He will manifest Himself to come to us to establish the proper rule of Dharma:
So manifested is the Avatar of Sri Ãdhi Sankara Bhagavad Pada.

Lord Shiva, also known as Dhakshinamurthy, who spreads the Universal Truth not by words but by his silence and by his sign of his hand which is held in the form of "Chin Mudra". About 2500 years ago, when the spiritualization of the people greatly reduced, all the Gods and the Rishis went to Kailash and pleaded with Lord Shiva to revive the world. Lord Shiva agreed with their request that He will manifest Himself to revitalize the Dharma. Lord Brahma, Indra and others also agreed to be born in this world to help Lord Shiva.

In this, there is a slight disagreement on the dates of Sankara. Traditional historians have placed his period as the 8th century AD. But, more orthodox Hindus believe the time period is around the 5th century BCE, quoting that one of the Acharyas of a Sankara Mutt known with the name as Sri Sankara, who has also composed many works, was mistaken in Sri Ãdhi Sankara's place.

Ãdhi Sankara was born in Kaladi, Kerala to an orthodox Nambuthri couple, Sivaguru and Aryambal. The couple had no children for a long time and after special prayers for 48 days Siva appeared in their dream offering them a choice of many children of average intelligence and long life or just one genius of a child with very short life span. They prayed to Siva to let Him make the choice as God knows what is best for them.

Thus a male child was born to them on the Vaikasa Suklabaksha Panchami in the star of Thiruvathirai. He was named Sankara. "Sam" means "Prosperity" and "Karathi" means "the giver". Sankara was very bright, able to learn Malayalam, Samskritham and Prakritham by the age of 3 years. His father died before he was five. Shortly after that he had his Brahmopadesam and started Vedic studies.
